Facebook flag critics given warning

SUVA – The Fiji Police Force is warning members of the public to monitor their frustrations vented on social media regarding the country’s process of creating a new flag.

A number of negative comments have surfaced recently on social media sites following the public announcement of the 23 flag designs shortlisted.

While none so far subject to a police investigation, Commissioner of Police Ben Groenewald has issued a warning and urged members the public to be wary when giving their “two cents worth” on the flag selection process via Facebook or other online media.

“Cybercrime through social media is a concern and we have previously warned people not to use social media in a way that might create a criminal offense.

“We have the ability that, if we get hold of the equipment that is being used, we can identify the people, we can identify the content and we can take steps against those people,” Commissioner Groenewald said, according to Fiji One TV news.

Fijians have the opportunity to give in their ideas and vote for their favourite flag until the end of this month. The matter will then be debated on in Parliament next month.

There has been much criticism online that the final 23 flag options have been designed by the flag committee from an amalgamation of ideas and are not the work of individuals who sent in finished designs
