Vote of no confidence resubmitted

PORT MORESBY – Papua New Guinea’s opposition has resubmitted a motion of no confidence in the government of the prime minister Peter O’Neill.

The opposition leader, Don Polye, says the motion, which carries the signatures of 17 MPs, was submitted to the acting speaker, Aide Ganasi, in parliament yesterday amidst the handing down of the budget.

It was moved by the deputy opposition leader, Sam Basil, and seconded by a former prime minister Sir Michael Somare.

An opposition motion, which was filed last week, was rejected by Ganasi after it was ruled defective.

Polye says he has been told this latest motion is in order and meets all technical requirements. He has urged O’Neill not to adjourn parliament to avoid the motion.

He has threatened legal proceedings if parliament is adjourned.
