Acting Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho said burglary, assault and crimes against women and children were areas of concern and more education was needed to raise awareness of these issues.
“We are working with FBC (Fiji Broadcasting Corporation) on educating the public on basic ideas to prevent crimes in our communities,” he said.
He said the police force also wanted to ensure the protection of children and women.
“We will continue to look after our communities, especially our women and children who are the most vulnerable.”
Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre co-ordinator Shamima Ali welcomed Brig-Gen Qiliho’s commitment to reduce crimes against women and children.
In a statement, she said the police were on the front-line when dealing with victims of violence most of whom were women.
“People need to believe that no one is above the law and those perpetrators of violence, whether it is the police or any member of the public, will be brought to justice,” she said.
