Territories pick their candidates

GUAM – The Democratic Party caucuses in Guam have given Hillary Clinton almost 60 per cent of their votes, completing a clean sweep of the three US Pacific territories in her bid for the US presidency.

In earlier primaries, she had secured more delegates than her rival Bernie Sanders in both the Northern Marianas and American Samoa.

American Samoa’s branch of the Republican Party has pledged all of its delegate votes to Donald Trump.

The president of American Samoa’s Republicans, Utu Abe Malae, said it was important the delegates, and the party, presented a united front ahead of the party convention in July, when a candidate would be formally nominated.

American Samoans are unable to vote in the United States general elections, but can participate in party nominating contests to select who will run for the presidency.
