Honoured on Queen’s birthday

NEW ZEALAND – This year’s Queens Birthday Honours list includes seven New Zealand Pasifika recipients.

They have been recognised for their work in health, Pacific languages, community and in the performing arts.

Neil Ieremia has been awarded an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to dance.

Ieremia’s dance company Black Grace is a highly recognisable and iconic cultural brand.

Three people have been admitted as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM).

Huhana Tetane Lemisio for her services to the Tokelau community and early childhood education.

Mele Fakatali Nemaia for tirelessly working to promote the Niuean language in New Zealand for over 20 years.

Ali’imuamua Sandra Alofivae for services to the Pacific community and youth improving the well-being of families and communities in Auckland.

And Dr Monique Faleafa for serving Pacific communities in the not-for-profit sector, district health boards, academia and social services for over 17 years as a clinician and as an advocate for improving health and social outcomes for Pacific communities.

There were two recipients for the Queens Service Medal (QSM)

Reverend Tevita Finau for services to the Tongan community, and Selma Theresa Scott has held numerous roles that focus on improving outcomes of Pacific Peoples, including the Chair of Pacific Trust Canterbury and PACIFICA Women.

Pacific People’s Minister Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga says these outstanding individuals have worked tirelessly to serve and help their communities.
