SAMOA – An accident at Puipa’a in Samoa on Saturday evening, involving a rental car and a bus, claimed the life of a man who died after saving the life of a baby.

An eyewitness told the Samoa Observer his vehicle was following the bus when the accident occurred.

“The Toyota Estima was heading to Apia and the bus was on its way to Leauva’a,” he said. “The driver of the Toyota Estima was a Chinese guy, he was speeding and he drove under the bus and the diesel tank of the bus exploded.”

According to the eyewitness, the man who died was killed while trying to save his niece and her baby from the burning bus.

“When the deceased man saw what was happening, he tried to grab his niece’s baby but he fell back into the bus and so he threw his niece’s baby out to one of the passengers.

“The baby boy has injuries on his head and the deceased’s niece has a broken arm.”

The eyewitness went on to say there were about six other people hospitalised.
