Wet conditions failed to dampen the spirit of teams in round one of the Vodafone Mixed Touch competition at Nikao Field on Wednesday.

According to Daphne Brown, the president of Cook Islands Touch, there was a good turnout of players and supporters.

The first round of games saw touch regulars 007 kick into gear quickly with its master general Andy Kapi leading the way, creating havoc for the usually solid ICI Transformers defence. Team 007 won comfortably 7-3.

The second round of games saw field one host two new exciting teams, BSP and Tuanga Taporoporo, who took the field kitted out in full gear and spirit for their new challenge.

It was a well-balanced game with both teams consisting of experienced and new players. It was the ladies that took on the leadership role on the field for both teams, Mati Toru for BSP and the Moekaa twins for Taporoporo.

Daphne Brown said: “It is good to see corporate teams bonding outside of the office in taking up the health and fitness challenge and having a rally of supporters.”

The match was very entertaining and drew much laughter but it was BSP who inched ahead with one try to claim its first win over Tuanga Taporoporo, 6-5.

On field two, KAPS took on Team ATT. KAPS were quick to take control of the game and post some early points. An outrageous dummy from Daphne Brown set up the touchdown that gave KAPS the lead at half time.

However, some unforced errors from KAPS gave the young Team ATT the opportunity to get into the game.

The on form KAPS import Mark Tudehope showed his class to set up the last try for team to give them the win. KAPS won 4-2.

Brown said it was good to see Team ATT in action again and gaining more experience.

This season will be a good build up for their players who will be competing in the Manea Games later this year, she added.

The last match of the night was between Mangaia and Vodafone with huge vocal support from their subs. Mangaia won 4-1.

The Vodafone men’s and women’s round one games kick-off today. Teams are reminded to be at the field on time.
