The Bluesky open men’s and women’s competition kicked off with the women’s play off for 3rd and 4th between Bounty Hunters and Nukz Power.

The match played at Nikao Field on Monday turned out to be a cracker of a game.

Bounty Hunters got points on the board early with impact player Edith Nicholas directing the play.

The side went into half time leading 3-1.

In the second half, NukzPower settled into the game and found its rhythm with Shar Atai making breaks to close the gap.

A scoop from Nicholas combining with a late cut from Monica Wichman to score saw Bounty Hunters hold onto its slim lead to finish the Bluesky women’s competition in third place.

Bounty Hunters won 6-5.

The first half of the women’s grand final was a tough one with both teams defending well.

It was FBI that scored first. NIKS countered with a try and the score stayed locked at 1-all going into half time.

A penalty to NIKS near the five metre mark and quick thinking from veteran Pare Tangata to tap and go to beat a scrambling FBI defence diving at the try line to score the side’s second try.

FBI came back to score its final try of the night through a wicked change of direction and step from young Paeru Ngaroi to seal the grand final for FBI winning 4-2.

The mixed touch competition will be held today.
