‘Unknown’ youngsters win Touch

The unknown Taokotaianga team claimed the 2018 Bluesky Boxing Day Touch Tournament which was held on Wednesday at the Swamp in Avatiu.

The side comprising of youngsters defeated the star-studded Panthers 4-2 in the final.

Cook Islands Touch president Daphne Brown said it was Taokotaianga’s strong solid defence and sneaky speed that killed the Panthers strike power.

“Impressive was young Willie from Taokotaianga who set up two tries to put his team in the lead.  He was deservingly awarded the MVP (most valuable player) male player of the day,” Brown said.

“A proud moment for Annie who played many years of touch here in Rarotonga to see her boys and family take out the Bluesky Boxing Day Tournament.”

The best try of the day went to Joshua Caffrey from Team 007 while MVP female was awarded to Liana from Team Switch.

All teams received prizes from Bluesky, the tournament’s major sponsor.

“The 2018 Bluesky Boxing Day Touch tournament again lived up to expectations with a scorching hot day and scorching hot play on the field,” Brown said.

“The Avatiu Field was swamped with players and supporters out to enjoy the games and family time and to run off all that Christmas kaikai.”

The huge demand and interest required the organisers to increase the teams from 16 to 20 teams.

Brown said this year saw many more family teams for reunions and holidays including family teams from New Zealand and Australia.

“Also joining in this year was a good number of overseas level two and three referees sharing their experience and knowledge with the local referees.

“It was impressive to see all teams dressed in outstanding uniforms and colours.  But it had to be ‘Team Pissheads’ who stood out in their sky blue attire from top to toe, sporting matching caps, socks and boots.”

Cook Islands Touch thanked the major sponsor of the Boxing Day Touch tournament, Bluesky and supporting sponsor Avarua Bakery, all referees and officials and teams for making the event a huge success.

“We wish everyone a safe and happy new year.”

The local Touch season kicks off mid-January with the usual round of muster games before the men’s, women’s and mixed competition.
