The regular Monday afternoon Bluesky Men’s and Women’s Touch Competition kicked off with a men’s catch-up game between GAT and Team Transport at Nikao Field.

Down on numbers, GAT needed to play a smart game on defence to hold out an eager Team Transport.

Both teams played well but it was the experience of GAT that kept them ahead on the scoreboard, winning 7-4.

In the second men’s game it was an easy win to Team ATT over Manatoa, who did not turn up.

The other men’s catch-up game was between Manatoa and Team Transport. This was won by default by Team Transport.

The final men’s match was GAT’s second game of the night against young guns the Germinators.

It was GAT that opened the scoring and stayed in the lead until halftime with five touchdowns to Germinators three.

But the Germinators steadily chipped away at a fatigued GAT to draw the game five-all.

A loose Germinators pass saw an intercept from Junior, who ran the length of the field to put GAT ahead.

Unfazed, Germinators regained composure and struck back with a quick play on the five-metre to equalise. The game continued in a try-scoring trading fashion until GAT managed to sneak in a try before the final hooter, snatching a close 8-7 win.

The women’s competition opened up with a blistering match between the fast-improving FBI Greens and the hardcore Bounty Hunters meeting each other for their second-round game.

Both teams came out determined to take the win and it was Bounty that posted the first points.

FBI Green bounced back and from good strong driving settles, Poko Tangata scooped and slide through the Bounty defence to pick up winger Vaiana Rima to cross the line. FBI went into the second half ahead by one try.

In the second half, the Bounty maidens turned up the heat, catching FBI Green napping on defence to score two quick tries to get ahead.

However, FBI Green managed to find its rhythm and quick set plays on the five-metre saw some outstanding dives from Kaiyah Atai, taking FBI into the lead and eventual victory by six touchdowns to the Bounty Hunters’ five.

It was another excellent close game for the FBI Reds and competition leader NukzPower. NukzPower had to stay focused on defence in the second half to hold back a fighting FBI Reds to stay ahead and win by a point. NukzPower won 5-4.

Top performances were delivered by the experienced NukzPower trio of Julz Westrupp, Apii Vavia and Tutai Ngametua, and from the FBI Reds it was Rima Moekaa and Nana Manuela combining well with youngsters Rima Browne, Paeru Ngaroi and Teretia Teinaki.
