Rain fails to deter touch players – or the fans

The bad weather didn’t deter touch fans who gathered at Nikao Field last Wednesday for the second round of the Bluesky Mixed Touch Competition.

In the opening match, the ICI Transformers took on newcomers Team Transport.

A loose pass from ICI saw Kiki Sword intercept and run the length of the field to post early points for Team Transport.

However, the more organised ICI bounced back and romped in to win the match 7-2.

The youthful enthusiasm of Team ATT was no match for the experienced old heads of Team Foodland, ATT going down two tries to Foodland’s six.

Finding their feet last week, Mangaia came out stronger and put up a solid effort to take on last year’s mixed champions 007.

Coach Tangi led his team admirably with some good settling patterns and set up all their team tries.

But 007 stuck to their game plan and held off the Mangaia challenge to win 8-3. In the other match, Elegi proved too strong for Livesmart, winning 6-3.

In an exciting match between Nukz Power and Aroa T Bags, wet conditions did not slow up slick footwork from NukzPower bullet Jarves Aperau, who carved up the excellent Aroa T Bags defence to score an outstanding individual try. Nukz still had to work hard to win by 4-2 over Aroa T Bags.

The round three men’s and women’s matches will be played today.
