Touch heads into open finals today

Expectations are high for an exciting Bluesky Open Men’s and Women’s Touch grand finals today at Nikao Field.

Nukz Power will play Bounty Hunters while Germinators will take on GAT in the women’s and men’s showdown.

The Nukz Power maidens have only lost once this season and are looking strong to take out this year’s finals.

The side is shaping up well for the Manea Games in October this year. They will use the final as a build up for the biennial games.

In the men’s competition final, the Puna Hiro-led GAT will be hoping to finish the 2017 season without a loss.

However, last season’s champions Germinators have worked steadily under the guidance of Andy Kapi and will be hoping to give their opponents a good run for their money.

Cook Islands Touch president Daphne Brown said both teams were speedy and skilled and it would come down to defensive play determining the winner.

Meanwhile, slight drizzle failed to dampen the spirits of players in the Bluesky Mixed Touch Competition on Wednesday.

“Kicking off the first round of games for the evening was 007 versus Southcoast, with both teams boasting speed, skill and national reps,” Brown said.

“Smarting from last week’s narrow loss, 007 regrouped and went back to their basics pulling out an excellent performance to outplay a reinforced Southcoast team 13 -7.”

Capitalising on a depleted but determined MFEM, the full strength NT Aroa smartly found the trusty hands of their female team members to dot down the two pointers, winning comfortably 11-2.

ICI pulled off another excellent, well controlled game to win over the promising Nukz Power 4-2.

It was a blistering performance from the young Team ATT which outscored a never-say-die Bluesky team with 16 touchdowns to 4. Team ATT racked up the two pointers in the impressive win.

The quietly improving TB had too much firepower against a gutsy Mangaia team who never gave up. TB won 7-4.
