The Cook Islands Touch Association 2016 season starts proper at Nikao Field this afternoon.

After the friendly games last week where teams got a chance to brush off the cobwebs, it will be all about gaining maximum points in the respective divisions.

In the open women’s grade build-up matches last week, defending champions Bounty Hunters defeated FBI while Team Ave overcame Nukz Power.

The mixed division matches on Wednesday had a better turnout with some powerful performances from the season campaigners.

Defending mixed grade champion 007 made a bullet start to their campaign after beating newcomers Mangaia 8-5.

Mangaia despite the loss put on a spirited performance and organisers believe they will be a side to reckon with this season.

In the other mixed match, Nukz Power overpowered a depleted looking Bluesky by 7-2 to emerge as one of the top contenders this season.

Cook Islands Touch Association president Daphne Brown said the teams were looking forward to the start of the season.

The 2016 season will begin with the open men’s and women’s competition.

At last week’s preseason build-up competition, the open men’s teams were absent but Brown says they will be out in full force for the opening round of matches today.

In the round one open women’s match, Bounty Hunter will take on Team Ace in an interesting battle followed by Nukz Power versus FBI match at 5pm.

In the men’s grade, Airport Jetz will play Quick Eze while Manatoa will battle the Germinators at 6.20pm.

“After last week’s Muster Games, the men’s teams have got their act together and have entered into the competition,” she said.

“Vaine Toa women’s team is still looking for players so if anyone is interested or want to learn the game, just come to the field and see me.”           - RK
