After a slow start in the open grade muster on Monday, teams came out in numbers in the mixed grade on Wednesday to brush off their weak links before the season starts proper next week.
In the opening match, a new look Southcoast Scorpions, boasting a handful of experience and talented players, defeated last year’s mixed competition runner-up ICI Transformers by 8-6.
ICI had some talented players especially the children of the ICI staff and with some good coaching, it will be a side to look out for this season.
In the second match, MFEM and Airport fought an even battle with MFEM edging out Airport by 6-5.
Mixed Touch defending champions 007 started their 2016 campaign on a high with glimpses of their super skills to beat Mangaia 8-5.
Despite the loss, the Mangaian could be the team to reckon with this season after an encouraging performance on Wednesday.
New side Top Kopz got straight into their game with their younger speedy enforcers dotting down tries and winning by 8-4 over the enthusiastic regulars Aroa T-Bags.
The seasoned Nukz Power, boasting younger talent this year, had a comfortable 7-2 win over an understrength looking Bluesky team.
Bluesky is expected to get back in full force next week.
Meanwhile newcomers CITC Woodstock and Heineken took up the opportunity for a friendly training game to test their percentage levels before taking on next week’s opponent.
“All teams are reminded that competition points begin as of next week’s games and that all teams must be wearing their team uniforms,” Cook Islands Touch Association president Daphne Brown said.
