Tupapa, Titikaveka crowned champions

In the CIFA Knockout Cup men’s final between the top two sides, Tupapa Maraerenga FC made a great comeback to beat Nikao Sokattak FC 3-2 on Saturday.

However it the women’s final that stole the show at the CIFA Complex in Matavera. Titikaveka caused a major upset after thrashing Tupapa Maraerenga 4-1 to win the title.

In an interesting men’s final, Nikao Sokattak scored two quick goals early in the match through their speedy strikers Mark Leito and Julius David to lead 2-0. They maintained their structure but did not penetrate, as shown early in the match.

Tupapa Maraerenga’s first goal came through Anthony Samuela from a spot kick in the 27th minute, and they continued with superior ball possession but couldn’t convert their chances into goals.

The first half ended with a 2-1 goal margin in favour of Nikao Sokattak.

In the second half, both teams were unable to create any goal scoring opportunities. 

From the 56th minute onwards Tupapa Maraerenga virtually dominated with ball possession and created several scoring opportunities, first with the equaliser scored from a free kick in the 61st minute. 

The side showed their experience and dominance until the end of the match.

In the 81st minute a free kick was awarded to Tupapa Maraerenga for a foul just outside the 18 yard area. Grover Harmon struck the ball past the Nikao Sokattak defensive wall into the far corner of the net to win the match 3-2. 

In the senior women’s match, the Titikaveka FC made history for their club by winning convincingly their first major trophy over the Tupapa Maraerenga after 19 years.

During the 15th minute it seemed that Titikaveka was heading for another loss in the Cup final when they accidentally scored an own goal which put Tupapa Maraerenga ahead by one goal to nil.

Tehinnah Tatuava in the 38th minute levelled the goal at one a-piece from a quick free kick from 20 metres out. Both teams were locked 1-all at the break.

Titikaveka up the tempo in the second half and the side was rewarded with a free kick from 30 yards. Tatuava stepped up and delivered, putting Titikaveka up by 2-1.

Lethargic defending saw Tupapa Maraerenga concede two more goals as Titikaveka romped home with a well-deserved 4-1 win.

In the under-14 boys finale, Tupapa Maraerenga defeated a hungry Titikaveka side by four goals to nil. Despite the result, Titikaveka never gave up but strived to make Tupapa Maraerenga work hard for their goals. 

Puaikura stamped their mark over their opponents Nikao Sokattak in the U14 girl’s match by 5-3, however, it was not an easy match for them.  Both sides were off to great start where the result was locked at 1-all early in the first half.

Puaikura marched on with another three more goals while Nikao Sokattak managed one as the former walked away with the hard fought win. Puaikura is celebrating their undefeated run for the 2018 Rarotonga Football Season.
