Tupapa beats Nikao in thriller

Host Tupapa Maraerenga premier men’s side has extended its lead on the points table after beating Nikao Sokattak 3-2 in a thrilling match at Victoria Park on Saturday.


The two teams battled tooth and nail in the crucial match of the Round Cup competition.

Nikao Sokattak surprised Tupapa Maraerenga with a goal in the 16th minute through left winger Nathan Tisam, who sent a header into the bottom left corner, past goalkeeper Manaariki Pierre.

Paavo Mustonen levelled the score line from a penalty after Sokattak defender Grafton Potoru was penalised for tripping Samuela Koiatu in the penalty area.

The teams went into the break locked at 1-all.

It was Tupapa Maraerenga who took the lead in the second half, thanks to a goal from Grover Harmon, assisted by Geoffery Strickland in the 51st minute.

Ed Brogan extended the lead to 3-1 with a 64th minute goal before Nikao Sokattak scored a late goal which proved too little as Tupapa walked away with a 3-2 win.

In the other Van’s premier men’s matches, Matavera and Titikaveka battled to a nil-all draw whilst on Friday Puaikura defeated Avatiu 4-2.

In the Islander senior women’s matches on Saturday, Tupapa Maraerenga earned a 1-0 victory over Nikao Sokattak while Titikaveka beat Matavera 5-0 and on Friday, Puaikura caused a big upset defeating Avatiu 3-2.
