The Cook Islands Football Association supports the continuous professional development of all active match officials by recruiting more referees.

Refereeing can be a highly rewarding challenge, encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle as well as significantly contributing to the development of the game.

Since joining the referee development course at CIFA, Cook Islands referee John Pareanga has quickly climbed the ladder to officiate at some of the Pacific’s premier soccer events.

“Being a referee has taken me to all corners of the Pacific,” Pareanga said.

Next month Pareanga will be amongst 16 appointed match officials from the Oceania region to officiate the U19 men’s championship in Tahiti, which commences on August 5. Pareanga is likely to stay on until the final match.

CIFA referee development officer Maara Kaukura said the Cook Islands Football Association is proud of John’s achievements.

“We are very pleased with John’s performance and representation of the Cook Islands as a nation at tournaments like this,” Kaukura said.

Becoming a referee offers the opportunity to become involved at a high level of football.

There are also other great benefits gained from becoming a referee that range from being part of a network of friends to gaining transferable skills that you can apply to your work life.

Training for all referees is held on Monday every week at the CIFA Complex from 4.30-6pm.

The CIFA Referee Department have been recruiting new members over the past two weeks and are extending further invitations to anyone who is interested in joining the referees for a busy 2018 football calendar.

Those who are interested are most welcome to contact Maara Kaukura by phone on either 28980 or 71768, or by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
