Tupapa Maraerenga suffered a big loss in the opening Group A match of the OFC Champions League in Port Vila on Friday.

The local champions from Rarotonga went down to much-fancied Papua New Guinea side Lae City 2-7.

Lae City scored the opening goal in the 10th minute through a defensive error from Tupapa, followed by their second goal just five minutes later.

In the 34th minute, Lae City then scored their third goal to take a commanding 3-0 lead.

Tupapa also had goal-scoring opportunities of their own but could not execute their chances properly.

In the 46th minute a foul in the penalty area by a Lae City defender on Tupapa’s Maro Bonsu-Maro opened up the opportunity for the Rarotonga-based club to get their first point.

Striker Sean Latimer stepped up to the challenge and blasted the ball past Lae’s goalkeeper to have Tupapa head into the break trailing 3-1 and still in with a chance.

But in the second spell, Tupapa Maraerenga defence was far too casual and they gave away four easy goals to allow Lae City to dominate the play and the scoreboard 7-1.

In the first minute of additional time, Tupapa Maraerenga was rewarded with their second goal after an assist from Latimer saw Maro Bonsu-Maro blasting home the consolation goal.

Despite the result, it was a hard-fought match for Tupapa Maraerenga, who were unfortunate not to score more goals.

Tupapa Maraerenga will be back in action at Korman Stadium Vanuatu today, playing at 8pm against host Nalkutan.
