The visiting New Zealand teams proved stronger on day one of the Rarotonga Under-16 College 7s Tournament at Raemaru Park in Arorangi yesterday.

 

Te Aute, Tikupunga, Hato Paora and Mt Roskill Grammar remained undefeated to finish on top of their pools after a tough two round of preliminary competition.

In Pool A, Te Aute defeated Nukutere 33-14 before overcoming Aitutaki 24-5 while in Pool B, Tikipunga beat Mt Roskill Warriors 27-0 before a hard fought win over Arorangi 15-14.

Hato Paora managed the top place finish in Pool C after thumping Te Aute Barbarians and Tereora II 43-0 and 31-10, respectively. In Pool D, Mt Roskill Grammar dominated with wins over Mangaia 24-5 and Tereora I 19-5.

Tournament coordinator Ben Koteka said they witnessed some tough and exciting matches yesterday.

Koteka said they expect the intensity to go up a notch in the finals today.

He urged people to come out in numbers to support the future stars of the game.
