Stage set for U16 tourney

Seven overseas teams are in Rarotonga to take on the local giants in an age group 7s tournament. 

Local teams will be taking on the mighty visitors in an exciting two day Air Rarotonga Under-16 College 7s Tournament which starts tomorrow at Raemaru Park.

The tournament will feature local teams, Mangaia and Aitutaki from the outer islands and Tereora College, Nukutere and Arorangi Academy from Rarotonga.

The overseas teams in the tournament are Te Aute, Te Aute Barbarians, Hato Paora and Tikipunga from New Zealand.

Two girls teams, Tasman from New Zealand and Tereora College will also feature in the tournament.

Tournament director Ben Koteka said the second edition of the U16 College 7s Tournament would continue to have a sport and culture theme.

“It has been created to build a purposeful competition pathway at home inclusive of our outer islands and overseas rugby families too. There will be a trophy for the best haka to promote our culture as well as a Spirit of Peace Team Award to promote our World Rugby global values of: Discipline, Respect, Integrity, Passion & Solidarity,” Koteka said.

Koteka said all overseas teams have arrived here and were looking forward to the tournament.

Dan Harper of the Hato Paora College said they have brought a 22-member team which includes 14 players.

The team has three Manawatu U16 rugby reps and a Roosters NRL rugby league academy rep.

The tournament will start with the opening round of games tomorrow from 12 noon followed by finals on Saturday.

Pool A Boys – Te Tute Barbarians, Hato Paoro, Tereora I, Tikipunga, Mangaia. Pool B Boys – Arorangi Academy, Te Aute, Tereora 2, Nukutere, Aitutaki.
