Manatoa claimed the first Steinlager Sevens, held at The Swamp in Avatiu on Saturday.

The side, made up of players from the national Sevens squad, overcame Avatiu Eels 19-5 in the final.

With four games played over four hours, it was superior fitness levels that made the major difference in the finals, said Cook Islands Rugby Union development manager Ben Koteka.

Manatoa scored three tries in the final – two from Jamian Iroa and the other from Steven Willis, while the Eels managed a lone try scored from their utility player Lai Rogorogoivalu.

“It was a good first hit-out tournament for all teams (and) featured some fresh young talent like the Akava brothers Brian and Tangi from Atiu (U18 squad), Thomas Daniel and Eddie Hoff (Phoenix) and also the Phoenix Sevens team from Ngatangiia who proved a handful against all opposition,” Koteka said.

The top try-scorer in the tournament, which featured six teams, was Tua Ravula from the Panthers with four tries.

The player of the tournament went to Iroa from Manatoa.

“Again meitaki maata to our hosts Avatiu Rugby Club and also our naming sponsor Steinlager and The Bond Store for your generous support,” Koteka said.

The next Steinlager Sevens tournament will be held on Saturday next week at Ngatangiia Field.
