The Rarotonga club rugby season starts this weekend with the opening round of competition.

In the feature match of the week, sponsored by The Bond Store, the Takuvaine Reds will take on Tupapa Panthers in the Senior A clash at the Happy Valley Field on Saturday.

In the other Senior A match on the same day, Avatiu Nikao Eels will host Arorangi Cowboys at The Swamp.

The major attraction in the opening round will be the juniors and the other age-group matches taking place at the Happy Valley Field.

The Reds, Panthers, Dragons, Cowboys and Eels will be competing in the juniors U9 and U11 grades, followed by the U13 clashes between Eels and Cowboys, and Reds and Panthers.

Dragons will play the Panthers in U16, while the Reds will take on the Dragons in an U19 match.

Cook Islands Rugby Union development manager Ben Koteka said they were bracing for an exciting start to the 2018 season.

He said the pre-season competition held between the Town and Country teams last Saturday would have provided a good platform for the players and clubs to prepare for their round-one battles.
