Kayakers celebrate a successful year

The local based Cook Island kayakers have made their mark this year competing in three of New Zealand’s calendar regattas, NZ Nationals (Feb 23-25) in Karapiro and Blue Lakes 1 (Oct 13-14) and Blue Lakes 2 (Dec 1-2) staged on Rotorua’s stunning Lake Tikitapu.

Under the direction of Roly Rolleston, this year’s Cook Islands Junior Kayak Programme kicked off to a great start with outstanding podium results.

The most recent Blue Lakes 2 event just over 2 weeks ago, saw our team claiming Silver in the U14 Girls K4, 200m and 500m events respectively as well as Silver in the U14 Girls K2, 200m finals.

The programme’s podium results at Blue Lakes 1 in October this year saw the team of 10 local based paddlers claim Gold in the U14 Boys K2, 500mU14 Boys K4 200m & 500m; Silver in the U14 Girls K4, 200m and 500m & U14 Boys K4, 500m; and Bronze in the U14 Girls K2 200m and 500m & U14 Boys K2, 200m.

Also this year in Karapiro for the NZ National Championships, the programmes junior girls made their debut claiming Silver in the U13 Girls Tyro 100m, 200m and 500m events as well as Bronze in the U14 Girls K1 and K2 200m, K2 500m and K4 200m and 500m events.

The programme currently consisting of 11 Rarotonga and 1 Aitutaki based paddlers and are now training for the NZ Nationals (Elite Event) staged over 3 days in February 2019.
