It was announced at the prizegiving at the completion of competition on Tuesday that Tereora College had claimed the overall trophy, but after race footage was reviewed late yesterday afternoon, Nukutere College jumped up the leaderboard to claim a joint win alongside Tereora.
The 2018 Vaka Iti regatta saw students competing across eight divisions on the 200-metre race course at Vaiana’s in Nikao.
Tereora College PE teacher Raukura Ellison said the result was pleasing for the students who took part in the event.
“After six weeks of training as part of their Level 1 course work it was very pleasing to get the win.
“The kids did awesome to (jointly) win the overall title.”
Vaiana’s once again provided an excellent venue, with a large crowd of proud parents, teachers, coaches and supporters cheering on their teams.
Some impressive paddling skills were demonstrated after an eight-week paddling programme, especially by those youngsters having to pick up very quickly on steering skills.
Event organiser Eva Allsworth acknowledged and thanked the sponsors, and also all the volunteers at today’s event, as well as the paddlers who assisted with the coaching programme in school term one prior to the competition.
Allsworth said the 2018 BSP Vaka Iti was a huge success, with over 300 students from five schools enjoying a day of oe vaka competition.
The regatta was once again proudly sponsored by Bank of South Pacific, who provided every competitor with a racing shirt and cap, as well as participation and winners certificates. BSP also provided volunteers to assist with the event.
Hosting the event once again was Vaiana’s, with Cook Islands Bus Passenger Transport Ltd providing transport for all involved.
