Makayla Ibbetson recalls having to get up begrudgingly at 4.30am as a young Girl Guide, to prepare and staff the crucial water stations on the Round Raro course. But as the day went by she found herself enjoying the company of her fellow guides and the role of supporting the runners.

“We encouraged each and every runner and gave them water and sponges to cool them down,” recalls Makayla. “It was definitely a fun experience.”

Now an 18-year old systems assistant at Turama Pacific, Makayla says the Round Rarotonga Road Race has built in her the spirit of volunteerism and fostered an active lifestyle.

Turama Pacific Travel Group has managed the running of the Round Raro event for the past 16 years through its Destination Management division – and in that time, Turama staff have not just volunteered and managed the event, but also run in it.

And this weekend, Makayla will be taking part in the series for the first time.

She is entering the 10km run – further than she’s ever run before.

“I decided this year that since I’m working for the company that manages this event annually, I’d participate in it.”

Though she does joke that if someone offers her a ride – she just might take it!
