Tennis team off to Nations Cup

Father Jason Pierre and daughter Ruby will represent the Cook Islands along with well-known tennis player Brett Baudinet and Tamara Anderson, at the Oceania Tennis Federation (OTF) Nations Cup Pacific tournament in Fiji next week from May 28 to June 3.

 

Team manager Davina Hosking departed earlier this month while tennis players Ruby Pierre and Baudinet left the island on Sunday.

Anderson, who is currently training in the United States, will join the team in Fiji as will Jason Pierre who will fly in from New Zealand.

The Cook Islands team placed well in inaugural OTF Nations Cup Pacific tournament last year, finishing fourth.

Tennis History: Involved in the sport since 11 years old.

2019 achievements: Represented Cook Islands at Nations Cup, Pacific, Finalist in the NZ Hutt Valley Open singles, Tennis Central teams event winner for Kapi Mana beating Manawatu, Wellington, Hutt Valley, Wairarapa and Taranaki teams; Titahi Bay Tennis Club Champ. 

Proudest moment in sport? Winning the mixed doubles club champs with my 65 year old mum against a lot of higher ranked players, then winning it with my daughter when she was 12.

Recipient of a Service to Tennis Medal from Tennis Central at the awards night before moving to Rarotonga. It was for the volunteer work as club captains of clubs, Tennis Central Regional committee work and sponsorship of tournaments, players and clubs in the area.

Age: 37

Parents: Brian and June.

Occupation: Entrepreneur.

Tennis History: Played as a Junior in NZ, University of Michigan before the pro tour.

2019 achievements: Davis Cup undefeated 4-0 in doubles winning our deciding match to hold our position in Group 3.

Proudest moment in sport? Receiving Davis Cup Commitment Award.

 

Name: Davina Hosking-Ashford

Age: 36

Parents:  Ripou (Aitutaki) and Aturangi Hosking (Rarotonga).

Occupation: Full time wife to Nick and full time mummy to two beautiful girls Wyn (3.5years) and Taumatina (1.5 years) and part time business manager/owner.

Tennis History: Have been playing tennis since 9/10 years old. A Junior U14 South Pacific Champ. Played junior and senior tennis tournaments across the Pacific and in New Zealand. New Zealand Club Tennis Champ - Singles (Howick), Doubles (Parnell Lawn Tennis Cub).

Proudest moments in Sport? Winning Cook Islands Junior Sports Woman 1998 and Cook Islands Torch Bearer here on Rarotonga - Sydney Olympics 2000. South Pacific Junior Champ. Cook Islands Women's Tennis Champ. Selected for the 2009 Mini Games (Silver medal teams event).

Proud moment as CI Tennis Manager: Nation’s Cup 2018 - Both men and women placed 4th, Oceania Champs Samoa 2018, witnessing the Cook Islands make history Winning Oceania Women's champ Tamara Anderson.
