Men’s triathlon gets good numbers

Seventeen entries were received yesterday for the Aroa Vegeland Men’s Triathlon, which will be held today at the Tikioki Tri Site, starting at 2pm.

Last year, Cook Islands Triathlon Association received 10 entries only.

Association president Roland Neururer said this year’s competition would be super interesting with many strong athletes on the starting line.

Neururer, a three-time defending champion, will have a very hard time to keep his perfect record alive, with some top guns, like Jacub Postrzygacz, super-fast in SUB, strong runners like Thomas Henderson, and some all-round strong men led by Jason Moorfield all going for the top podium finish.

The event is becoming more popular over the years as it is slightly different from the regular triathlon.

“It is for men only and the course is a 1.2 kilometre Stand Up Paddle board course in the lagoon, followed by an on-and-off road mountain bike, this year with a twist,” Neururer said.

“The course is from Tikioki to Papaaroa and back, comprising of 15km. You will need to take your running shoes with you as there is a 1.4km run through the bush during the ride! The triathlon finishes off with a short 2km loop run in Tikioki.”

Neururer said the course would be hard and fast because of the dry weather lately.

“CITAI would like to say a big meitaki maata to the main sponsor Aroa Vegeland and supporting sponsor, The Bond Store and Ariki Adventure.”
