While putting their all on the line for national glory in their respective sports codes, Team Cook Islands athletes also carry the reputation of the nation and in that vein, much effort is put into dressing the team.
As the a major sponsor of Team Cook Islands, boating 130 athletes across 13 codes, and being in the apparel business, Mareko Island Creation have put together island-inspired gear for athletes and officials.
Team Cook Islands chef de mission Robert Graham says they are overwhelmed with the support shown by Mareko in providing a range of uniforms for athletes, including casual wear and the official team uniform.
The uniforms, in traditional Cook Islands green, feature strong island motifs that are sure to inspire athletes to greatness.
Ei kau, hats, poe parau and casual pareu are included in the athletes’ uniform package as the team also take seriously the ambassador roles they play while on tour.
Graham says Mareko has gone ‘above and beyond’ in its sponsorship of Team Cook Islands uniforms and adds that the local business has shown keen interest to continue its support of the sports team in future events, including the Rio Olympics next year.
Team Cook Islands athletes and officials have three weeks to firm up final details ahead of the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea, running from July 4 to 18.
Today the team will attend a Takai Marae ceremony at the House of Ariki in Arorangi for a special blessing of athletes and officials.
Over the coming weeks the team will also attend church services before a final farewell for team members, who will begin departing for PNG later this month.
