They were invited and travelled to New Caledonia to compete in the Oceania cadet qualifying event and the Global Junior Circuit.
The event was held in New Caledonia from August 11- 22. The Cook Islands duo did the community proud and according to secretary of the Aitutaki Table Tennis Association, Teetu Tschan, “They both did us and the Cook Islands proud, but it was the brilliant 11 year old girl, Juiel Thompson, who stole the limelight and returned from the tournament with two medals and a trophy.”
Thompson won the Under 12 Global Junior Circuit competition and got the winner’s trophy and she also won the bronze medal in the Singles Under 12 of the Oceania cadet qualifying event. Thompson also won the silver medal in the Doubles Under 12 with Fijian girl Sally Lee, in the same event behind New Caledonia.
The young team of Aitutaki Table tennis players who represented the whole of the Cook Islands, returned to a big welcome to their home island of Aitutaki.
According to Tschan, “Parents and members of the Nikaupara Table Tennis Club are justly proud and salute the player’s talents and perseverance in the sport.”
