Coaching combination impresses squad players

The turnout at rugby league training for the upcoming Tri Series continues to impress Cook Islands Resident officials.

Both the women’s and men’s squads got together for training at the Tupapa Maraerenga Sports Field on Monday this week to prepare for the series, which will be held in October. The series will feature an Australian Kukis team and a club from Papua New Guinea.

Cook Islands Rugby League Association competition coordinator Taua Benioni said the coaching combination of Darren Piri and Bobby Hansen had created a lot of interest amongst the players named in the squad.

“It’s good to see these players turning up, as it’s obvious their intentions are to be named in the CIRLA squad for this upcoming Tri Series in October,” Benioni said.

The women’s squad, which was released last week, had their first training run earlier this week.

The turnout wasn’t that good and coach Tai Ngari remains hopeful it will get better in the coming weeks.

“Coach Tai Ngari understands the situation as most girls are involved with the Te Maeva Nui celebration and encourages all to make an effort to turn up and support the team,” Benioni said.

“Tai Ngari and other team members have arranged individual lunchtime training sessions during the week and will call on a full training for after the Constitution celebration.”

Training for the men’s team will continue on Monday at the National Stadium, starting at 5pm.
