The Cook Islands Rugby League 13s competition heads into knockout stage with playoffs in the men’s and women’s divisions this weekend.

In the premier men’s competition, top placed Avatiu Nikao Eels will take on second placed and defending champions Tupapa Panthers for a place in the final.

The losing side will play the winner of the third-place playoff between Arorangi Bears and Ngatangiia Matavera Sea Eagles, in the semi-final next week.

The Eels versus Panthers and Bears versus Sea Eagles match will be held at Aretere Park this Saturday.

Eels coach Clive Nicholas said: “This week will be interesting for us as we will be hosting the double header at home.”

Nicholas said the battle against the Panthers – who they defeated in round one but lost in round two – will be a tough one.

“(If we win) we get the rest of the week before the grand final. It’s going to be either the shortcut to the final or the hardest way to the final.”

Nicholas said the morale in the camp was high because of the return of a few boys and also suspended players.

“I’m calling on all our faithful supporters to come out in full force.”

In the women’s competition, top placed Lady Bears will take on Lady Panthers in the first/second place playoff while Lady Eels will face defending champions Lady Bulldogs in third place playoff.

The winner of the first/second place playoff heads straight into the final while the loser will play the winner of the Eels and Bulldogs in next week’s semi-final.
