Cook Islands Rugby Union (CIRU) has named a 20 member national Sevens squad for the upcoming Pacific Games and the Oceania (Olympic) Qualifiers.

The squad include players that recently represented the country at the Hong Kong Sevens. It has a mix of Fijian, Samoan and Cook Islands players.

CIRU in a statement said the players have been selected in the national train-on squad for 2019/2020.

“This squad will form the base of players who will contend for positions for the Pacific Games in July 2019, Oceania Olympic Qualifiers November 2019 and onwards,” CIRU said.

“The Pacific Games presents the opportunity to qualify for the Hamilton and Sydney legs of the HSBC World series in 2020 while the Oceania Olympic Qualifiers will be part of the qualification process for the 2020 Olympics, Tokyo and also present the opportunity to qualify for the Hong Kong, Hamilton and Sydney legs of the HSBC World Series 2020.”

Cook Islands Sevens’ Hong Kong campaign a week ago did not go as expected after the team lost all their matches in the pool competition.

In their first pool match, the side went down to Chile 31-5 before losing to Germany 10-7. In the final pool match yesterday, Cook Islands lost to Uganda 29-24 in a close tussle.

After the first loss, the national side fought back hard to win their remaining two matches but fell short by a try.

Coach Vase Samania was hoping to finish second in the pool and qualify for the quarters.

However, he was pleased that the players were able to gain exposure of competing at a top level competition.

Meanwhile, the players named in the train-on squad are requested to be available for a management and players introduction at the CISNOC office today at 5.30pm.

“We look forward to seeing you all there,” CIRU said.
