Cook Islands Canoeing Association (CICA) will be holding its first Oe Vaka Corporate Race Day for 2019 tomorrow at Nikao Beach – Vaiana’s.

The much anticipated competition already has a group of teams registered from government, tourism, hospitality and retail sectors.

CICA official Eva Allsworth said the teams were gearing up well for tomorrow’s races.

“A lot of the teams are taking training sessions run by the Cook Islands Canoeing Association this week to ensure they are ready to race on Saturday,” Allsworth said.

“Defending champions Kitelicious will be back to defend their title.”

Kitelicious defeated two-times winners Vaiana’s in a close race last year followed by Topshape in third, with Prime Foods rounding out the top four.

They clocked 55.34 seconds, and also won the prize for best-dressed team.

All steerers will be provided for the participating team on the day of the race by the association to fill in the 12th seat.

If a team does not have 11 paddlers, they can join with another company or individuals to complete the team.

The participating teams are also encouraged to dress up. There is no set uniform, but the organisers encourage teams to have their own uniform or costume/fancy dress for the event. There is a prize for the best dressed team as well.

A minimum of five women paddlers per team (steerer not counted) is compulsory otherwise the team will be automatically disqualified.

Teams are only allowed a maximum of three paddlers who are 2017-2018 registered paddlers with Cook Islands Canoeing Association, competing for them.

The final one hour training session for the teams will be held today from 4.35pm to 5.30pm and 5.35pm to 6.30pm. Paddles and steerers will be provided for training sessions.

Entry fee is $300 plus the vat which totals up to $345 per team. Payment for each team to be in cash or cheque and made to Cook Islands Canoeing Association.
