Former Cook Islands Olympic sailor Helema Williams is jetting off on Friday to represent the country at the World Olympian Forum.

As a highly successful international athlete Williams will act as a Cook Islands representative in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The 27-year-old, who represented the Cook Islands at the London 2012 Olympics, is originally from Manihiki, where she took up sailing from a young age.

She competed in the Laser Radial class event.

She was also the flag bearer for the Cook Islands at that Olympic Games.

Helema is also a member of the national Olympians association and Olympians Cook Islands.

"I'm super excited to attend the forum on behalf of all our Cook Island Olympians. I will be really interested to hear what activities and projects they are doing. I look forward to learning from this experience and putting the knowledge I will gain into action,” Williams said.

Erin Quirke, president of Olympians Cook Islands, said: "I am very pleased we have a delegate attending this forum. Our national Olympians association was setup just last June, so it’s very timely that our Olympians have exposure to this networking and knowledge sharing event"

She added: “Helema is a confident young woman and an exceptional athlete winning medals at Pacific Games with tons of international race experience.   I am certain she will represent the Cook Islands with dignity and ease."

A release from Olympians Cook Islands said: “The World Olympian Forum will focus on strengthening the capabilities of National Olympian Associations. It will celebrate Olympians within the Olympic Movement, highlighting their vital role as ambassadors for the Olympic ideals.

“The Olympians who are attending will be involved in workshops, a Grants Challenge and sessions all aimed at upskilling and providing the tools necessary for them to become effective ambassadors for the Olympic Movement.

“It will start with a joint day with the International Athletes Forum, to discuss the different but complimentary roles that the Athlete Commissions and Olympian Associations have in supporting athletes and Olympians in all stages of their lives, and opportunities for collaboration at a national level.

“The World Olympians Association will welcome 148 participants from 110 National Associations to the Olympic Capital for the World Olympians Forum.

Thomas Bach, Current President of the International Olympic Committee, will also take part in a Question-and-Answer session at the Forum. The forum will be from April 13 to April 15.
