The Cook Islands Sevens team has arrived in Hong Kong and had their first run on Sunday (CI time).

The side used the opportunity to adapt to the conditions and work on the final touch up before the three-day tournament kicks off on Thursday.

The national side is grouped with Chile, Germany and Uganda in Pool G.

The team will be competing in the World Rugby Sevens Series Qualifier alongside 11 other nations.

Cook Islands Sevens coach Vase Samania said they were approaching the tournament with caution and would take “a game at a time”.

“We can’t look too far ahead in a three-day tournament.

We have to put together a strategy for our first match and look at how we can improvise on it heading into our second match,” Samania said.

“The game plan also depends on how our opponents play and we will get to know them better after the opening round.”

The team left the country on Wednesday last week and spend three days in Auckland where the local players were joined by the five overseas-based players.

Samania used the opportunity to gel the players together and work out a formidable combination.

Meanwhile in the other qualifiers pools, host Hong Kong is the top seed leading Pool E which has Tonga, Zimbabwe and Philippines while Pool F comprise Ireland, Russia, Uruguay and Jamaica.

The main draw (Pools A to D) will feature the teams that are part of the World Rugby Sevens Series.
