Mangaia ready for cricket season

Saturday November 21, 2015 Written by Published in Cricket

After rain marred the start of the Mangaian cricket season opener last week, the participants are chomping at the bit to get some cricket action today.

Four weeks of junior clinic has set the ball running, with the senior players’ raring to show their skills on the pitch.

Cook Islands Crickets chief executive officer Alister Stevic said although the sport had been played in Mangaia in the late as the 1950s, the interest was still alive among this generation.

“You can see that cricket is still very much in the Mangaian blood, I have been blown away by how quickly they have learnt and developed their skills.”

Four weeks of junior cricket competitions at the Mangaia School involving 12 teams has provided a real buzz for the sport on the island.

Stevic said adults regularly headed to the Oneroa field to watch the children play and understand more about the game.

“Now the adults are eagerly awaiting their opportunity to get into the action - each with the hopes of taking out the Mangaian grand final.”

“Three villages are participating in the competition. Veitatei and Tavaenga both have men’s and women’s sides while Keia have entered two men’s and two women’s sides.”

The competition today is scheduled to start at 1pm at the Oneroa field and will be officiated by upcoming umpires Moe Tangatakino, Taoi Nooroa, Uaongo Ngarua, Naomi Mareto and Tuara Tuara.
