Letters: Repay study loan through service

Wednesday January 29, 2020 Published in Letters to the Editor

Dear editor,

Just to reassure your correspondent (Letters, Jan 28), the proposal before the Budget Committee for a Cook Islands Tertiary Education Student Scholarship scheme states that should students who receive a scholarship stay in country once graduated, they can repay their loan by service back to the country.

That service is for as many years as they receive financial support (for example, a two-year degree is repaid by two years of service, just as the scholarship scheme with MoE operates currently).

Only if they leave the Cook Islands to work overseas would they need to repay the money.

Meitaki maata e kia manuia,

Dr Debi Futter-Puati
Director
The University of the South Pacific
Cook Islands Campus
