Suspension ‘heavy-handed’

Saturday October 27, 2018 Published in Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

The avoidable suspension of the members of the Cook Islands Nursing Association (CINA) as reported in the Cook Islands News appears heavy-handed and leads one to assume the Secretary of Health acted under instructions.

As a recognised non-government organisation, the CINA is expected to act and function independently of government. The resulting public outcry and support for the nurses therefore did not come as a surprise, except perhaps for the government.

In spite of the suspension being terminated, the far-reaching damage caused will remain for a long time.

It will do nothing to restore confidence in the Ministry of Health and government.
