Debts will be repaid

Thursday August 09, 2018 Published in Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

I have been back and forwards to the Cook Islands since I was a child (I am now 55).

I would sincerely like to thank the hospital staff for the wonderful care I received after an accident I sustained on Rarotonga.

I have been released from hospital after a cancer relapse followed by two heart attacks. I am writing this to tell people I intend to clear my debts, even though I have still not been paid for the last two jobs I did. Anyway, I have paid off three huge accounts, with two more to go. I have had to start again in New Zealand and have put in a tender with Kiwi Built for 130 homes in my neighbourhood alone. Instead of bowing my head I have taken inspiration from the story of the donkey in the well: scrape the dirt around me, stand on it and keep digging until I am out.  I will strive to clear my debts. I have paid off money owed, even while under hospital care. I just want people to know I do have honour and am not going to set myself back through dishonesty.

            Daniel Ioane,
