Too many tourists

Monday July 09, 2018 Published in Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

Somebody please shut the gates! This place has gone insane. There are just too many people coming in.

It’s like a runaway bus and there’s nobody in the driver’s seat. And it’s heading straight for the cliff.

I’m tired of the Tourism people saying that everything is great. It’s only for a few people who are making all the money. And you know who that is.

OK, so other businesspeople are getting more money, so that’s good, and VAT must be up to cover the unpaid taxes some people got away with earlier this year thanks to the government.

But we are getting invaded and the locals are the ones copping it.

There is no infrastructure to cope – just look at the state of our roads – and imported workers outnumber the local population.

Been out on the road lately? You can’t even drive on it now.

And I’m told there are even more planes coming in daily, full of tourists. How many exactly? And did we get a say in it? We will be speaking a new language soon.

Oh, and I heard the new Cook Islands greeting the other day from a sweating checkout girl at the supermarket: “Kia Orana Yourself”.

    Dear Enough Insanity,
I too, have had many trips to Rarotonga and Aitutaki from 1994 - 2013. In 2000, my late husband and I married in Aitutaki.
Peter had travelled to over 140 countries and we found the Cook Islands were our favourite place - your people make this place “Heaven on Earth” so just remember that it is Tourism supports many Islanders. So don’t bite the hand that feeds you.
    Thanks

On behalf of most Cook Islanders who do not agree with this person's letter, i would like to apologise for their comments. To our visitors, please do not let the comments of a few Cook Islanders define who we are!! To the person who wrote this letter please send your letter to the people responsible for the Infrastructure and roads and not to the Tourists who come here to visit our beautiful islands.
Your letter make us look bad.

    Proud Local

Next week is our eighth trip to Rarotonga, having spent approx $10000 per holiday. My wife and I would be happy to spend this money in Fiji next time if you like. I’m happy to spread the word to my fellow Australians that tourists are not welcome in the Cooks.
    Spread the love

Hmmmm....makes people from the states think of other options when the only CI news source emphasizes the local sentiment. You might as well say Kia Orana somewhere else.
