Hidden danger in voting for best person

Wednesday June 13, 2018 Published in Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

Just a very brief one to say what a good letter that was last Saturday titled “How to recognise a failing democracy”, from someone who signed as “Forever Optimistic for the Cook Islands”.

One point, however, I would like to take a different position on, and that is where that writer advocated voting for the best person.

In some other places that should be the best advice, but where my opinion differs is that the best candidate may unfortunately have aligned himself with the very party that is guilty of all the wrongs the writer lists. Giving that person one's vote could have the dire consequence of bringing back into office the very party which least deserves another term because of its many transgressions.
