No free ride for this Grey Power taxpayer

Dear Editor,

In 1964 I started work in New Zealand, doing two jobs and paying tax accordingly.

Of the 48 years from 1965 to 2013 that pensioners in the Cook Islands were exempt from paying tax on their old-age pension payment, I was already paying tax in New Zealand, which continued for 30 years (from 1964 to 1994) of my working life there, together with other Grey Power members.

Our tax money was filtered through the system to finance and maintain all government businesses in the Cook Islands, including the same roads, hospital, dental care and water system which ‘Son of Apiripiri’ claims that he, his mum and his dad paid for.

Did you know that my tax money from New Zealand enabled Papa Arapati and the first CIP government to finance their first budget? They had nothing in the kitty!
