Angene, who fell ill during Parliament, is in New Zealand for medical treatment before taking a tour of the prisons in the North Island.
The ‘Action Man’ was to visit New Zealand for an official engagement next week, but opted to go a week earlier for health reasons.
The medical checkup was recommended by the local doctors following two visits to Rarotonga Hospital last week.
Angene’s chief executive officer Terry Rangi said: “The minister has probably taken too much of workload and needs to slow down a bit. He needs a bit of time to relax from his ministerial responsibilities and all the community work he does.
Rangi said Corrective Services secretary Tai Joseph has joined the minister for a North Island prison tour. “The minister is enjoying a good rest this week before he embarks on an official engagement with New Zealand Prisons.”
