Rarotonga’s Simi Teiotu breathed a sigh of relief at hearing that enforcement of the helmet law will be delayed to September 30.

The initial grace period was supposed to end today and motorcyclists were required to wear their helmets from tomorrow, or face a fine of $250.

But lack of supplies prompted Commissioner of Police Maara Tetava to again extend the grace period, to the end of September.

Teiotu, who is expecting his order to arrive this coming month, welcomed the decision.

“I had a helmet but gave it to my niece,” he said. “This week I went to all the outlets selling the helmets but couldn’t find the right size. People have been coming out of the shops with three to four helmets.

“I hope the retailers are able to get the new supplies with the right sizes in the coming weeks so everyone can comply with this law.”

Cook Islands Motor Centre has ordered another shipment this week after their latest stock sold out in a couple of days.

Teariki Pennycook said the company still had some helmets instore but are hoping for more sizes in the next shipment due to arrive here in early September. “It’s good for the customers, they will have more choices now.”

Police spokesperson Trevor Pitt confirmed the extension was applied due to the inability of suppliers to meet the demand for helmets.

“Police will continue to monitor those already abiding by the law to continue wearing their helmets.”

How hard is it to have purchased a helmet, the people who don't wear a helmet are mainly the ones who will suffer so I guess no big deal, just look for all the concussed retards
