Engineers are working to fix the engine of the Toa, which overheated and broke down trying to rescue a fishing boat on the reef.

Grant Buchanan from Express Diesel Ltd New Zealand and Ports Authority personnel Tangianua Amiri and Roger Ua got to work on the engine yesterday.

Mechanical parts and tools needed for theoverhaul operation had been freighted in by sea and air.

The Vision and the Sakulu fishing boats have assisted in the berthing of cargo ships and fuel tankers calling into Avatiu port, since the Ports Authority tug’s breakdown in September.

Toa’s engine overheated during efforts to release the stranded MV Wairau from the reef in Rutaki.

Meanwhile, Public tenders for the supply and build of a new aluminum tugboat closed in late October 2019.

The Government Tender committee advice is expected this month. – Melina Etches
