Ketch of the day

Ketch of the day

Traffic ground to a halt throughout Avarua yesterday, as a 16-metre Formosa ketch made its way slowly through town.

Through Tupapa, the yacht inched along as crew on its prow, high above the road, lifted the festive lights out of the way. Hundreds of cars and scooters backed up, most drivers happy to patiently enjoy the spectacle.

Since 2014, the Eastern Star had been taking charters around Rarotonga and further afield to the Pa Enua. Its “huge decks” were perfect for sunset cruises and private functions such as hen and stag parties, and could accommodate as many as 25 passengers, former owner Keith Christian said when he bought it in 2014.

Now, its new owner has even more extraordinary plans for the 30 tonne yacht.

Hemi Enoka has bought the boat, previously owner by Sail Rarotonga, and yesterday transported it to his property near Avarua Bakery on the back road in Tupapa.

He wants to restore the Eastern Star. He may convert it into a home – or one idea he has is to turn it into a backpackers hostel.
