Te Ipukarea Society (TIS) recently completed a two-day first aid course in anticipation of their upcoming trip to Suwarrow (see story page 18).
Patience Vainerere from the Cook Islands Red Cross led the course, which saw participants refresh their knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). TIS team members also learned how to use a defibrillator and how to treat sprains, dislocations and puncture wounds.
Referring to the upcoming trip to Suwarrow for rat eradication work, TIS technical director Kelvin Passfield says, “as there is no medical assistance on the island, we need to be prepared for medical emergencies”.
“The skills learnt will help keep us safe and healthy during our one month on the island.”
