The 10-year-old girl critically injured in a car crash on Saturday morning near the Avarua Cook Islands Christian Church, is no longer in intensive care, and is in a stable condition.

Police media liaison officer, Trevor Pitt, said the driver, her grandfather, is also in a stable condition following minor injuries sustained in the incident.

The young girl was a passenger in the rear of the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Pitt said the vehicle, travelling north along Ara Tapu main road, veered from its lane and ploughed bumper-first into a stone wall outside the church.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident, but say speed was not an issue.
