A love story and poetry writing competition has been organised by the Ministry of Education.

The 2019 Love Stories and Poem Writing Competition is open to all secondary school students Year 7 to Year 13.

According to the ministry, a love story can either be in Maori or in English.

It can be based on a friend, neighbour, pet, your island, your car, family anything that’s focused on love which could include God, the waves, the lagoon and more.

It must be original and have 300 words in English or 450 words in Maori. There are three categories; Years 7 and 8, Years 9 and 10 and Years 11 to 13.

The poem writing competition is for Years 1 to 6.

It requires students to write a poem in Maori or English, no more than 20 lines about love.

There is a category for Years 1 to 3 and another category for Years 4 to 6.

Learning and Teaching Advisor for English/secondary literacy, Jessica Le Bas said this is the third year of the competition.

Le Bas said: “Last year we had well over 200 entries, including many from the Pa Enua schools.

“The objective of course is to promote and celebrate good writing, in Maori and English, by young Cook Islanders. An anthology is published each year of the top stories. It’s a superb publication!”

She said the sponsors this year are CITC, Moana Gems and the Ministry of Education and they would like to see more sponsorship for the competition.

Both competitions close on August 17 and the award ceremony will be held on the first week of September during Literacy Week.

Entries can be emailed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or delivered to the Ministry of Education office in Nikao, Rarotonga.
