Following an extremely successful maiden project in Aitutaki in July 2017, Travel Teacher volunteers have returned to Araura College to provide teaching support to students and teachers as part of a one-month service expedition throughout the final weeks of term two.

The programme, supported by the Ministry of Education and the local island council in Aitutaki, has seen 14 volunteers from the UK and Europe immerse themselves in the local culture and traditions of the island.

In addition to the cultural integration, the program will see Travel Teacher volunteers contribute to the sustainable development of a teaching support program lead by founder Matt Ray.

“We are delighted to return to Aitutaki and in particular Araura College, we are always made to feel very warm and welcome by the teachers, staff and the wider community,” said Ray.

“Our programme’s aim is to promote inclusive teaching and learning in the school by working together with the local teachers to ensure all students get the access to support and learning approaches which meet their needs.”

Ray said the volunteers are able to assist Araura College teachers to work with students in smaller groups.

“In a large group environment, teachers can use our volunteers to go and work 1-2-1 or with small groups which helps to reinforce the curriculum topic which then enables the students to learn at their own pace and also for the teachers to have much needed extra human resources on hand.”

Ray said the second visit by the group would not have been possible without the support of Araura College principal Tracy Spiers.

“Travel Teacher has an excellent relationship with the school and at large this is due to the support and level of reception from principal Tracy Spiers who has been a great supporter of the program since its inception in 2015.”
